They call it "Africa’s Gem", this vast stretch of land with its wide horizons and endless stretches of desert dunes and rocky plains. It boasts a wealth of beautiful birds and animals, who live throughout the country and some of the most unusual plant life to be found anywhere in the world. This is just part of what makes Namibia one of the most fascinating countries in the world.

Situated in south-western Africa, Namibia straddles the Tropic of the Capricorn. The surface area of Namibia is 824 268 square kilometers, which is almost four times the size of Britain and bigger than Texas.

Namibian Hunting Regulations

Trophy hunters are advised to hunt with a registered member of the Namibian Professional Hunting Association, known as NAPHA. Its aims and objectives are to look after game and nature and to safeguard the client and partiticulary the non-resident hunter and apply ethical conduct on hunts and to countenance only fair chase. Archery Trophy hunting is permitted from the beginning of February to the end of November.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism states that all archery hunting will take place under the supervision of a registered bow hunting guide and only on a bow registered property.

All trophy-hunting operators must be registered with the Namibian Tourism Board (NTB) www.namibiatourism.com.na

No dangerous game may be hunted with the Bow i.e. Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant, Hippopotamus, Crocodile and Lion.

Numbers allowed for trophy hunting are a maximum of two animals per allowed species.

Climate

On average the interior of Namibia has 300 days of sunshine a year. A typical semi-desert climate with hot days and cool nights. Midsummer temperatures may rise to over 40 degrees centigrade. Winter days are warm but dawn temperatures may drop to freezing. The rainy season lasts from October to April.

Customs

It is legal to import Bows for trophy hunting – No import permits necessary. Note that Cross Bow hunting is illegal in Namibia.

Currency

The unit of currency In Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (N$) which is fixed to the South African Rand. Visa-, Master Cards and Travellers cheques are widely accepted in shops and banks. Vieranas Safaris accepts travellers cheques and foreign currency (US $/ Euro/ ZAR) at currant exchange rates.

Electricity

On the Ranch we have 220v power, provided by generator and electric cells. Throughout Namibia we use 220/ 240 volts. European and American 3 pin plugs cannot be used.

Drinking Water

Water is a precious commodity in a dry country like Namibia and therefore we ask to conserve water it supports life. The drinking water on Vieranas Ranch is from an underground borehole, pure and of the highest standard.

Dehydration

As the air can be very dry, it is advisable to drink plenty of liquids. Dehydration medication is always advisable.

Entry requirements

Foreign nationals must be in possession of a valid passport to visit Namibia. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of intended departure from Namibia. For further information: Ministry of Home Affairs, Tel (++264 61) 292 2102.

Health

Health services compare favorable with those of other developing countries. International SOS Medical and Emergency Services can airlift clients to Windhoek were advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services are available. The only health requirement is that malaria tablets are recommend for your visit. Always consult your personal doctor before leaving home and make sure that you have comprehensive medical cover.

Languages

The official language is English. Afrikaans (derived from Nederlands) is the lingua franca. German is spoken widely. The main indigenous languages are Kwanyama (Owambo), Kwangali (Kavango), Herero and Nama-Damara.

Sun

The heavy intensive UV-rays can result in quick sunburn. Please take all necessary precautions (sun block SPF 30, after sun lotion, hats, sunglasses, lip balm etc.)

Time Zone

Summer: GMT + 2 hours. From the first Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

Winter: GMT + 1 hour. From the first Sunday in April until the first Sunday in September.

Tips and gratuities

Tips should be given according to the service rendered. Tips to camp staff can also be in the form of a useful gift.

Traveling / Roads

Left-hand driving applies and traffic signs are mostly international. Main trunk roads are tarred, and the district roads are good gravel/ dirt roads.

What to pack for your hunt

Warm clothing is essential for the mornings and evenings. Hard wearing khaki colored clothing or camouflage can be worn during the day when hunting.

Hat/ cap with face mask and gloves
Camo clothing of your choice (long pants is good for stalking)
Camo paint for exposed skin
Human scent repellent
Comfortable walking boots (recommend 2 pairs) with socks and casual footwear
T-shirts and shorts
Casual long sleeved shirts and pants for chilly evenings
Warm light jacket for cold mornings
Sun glasses
Sun screen (SPF30), lip balm and mosquito repellent
Binoculars (8x40 or 10x42) and/ or compact type rangefinder and small torch
Camera with lens 35-70 and 70-210 and extra batteries, film (ASA 200) if you bring a digital camera remember your recharge cable and adapter with extra memory cards
Personal items such as toiletries, personal medication, and battery operated shaver etc.
